Lee Baxandall
Posted 29 November 2008

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of American writer, translator, critic and founder of the Naturist Society, Lee Baxandall, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on 27 November at the age of 73. Besides founding the Naturist Society, Baxandall was the first editor of its magazine, Nude and Natural (formerly Clothed with the Sun), founded the Naturist Action Committee and the Naturist Education Foundation. His books, International Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation (1981) and World Guide to Nude Beaches & Recreation (1980, 1995 and 1997) provided a wealth of information to naturist travellers seeking locations for nude recreation all over the world. In 2002, Baxandall retired from public life because of declining health due to Parkinson's Disease and passed the reigns of the Naturist Society to long time associates Nicky Hoffman Lee and Margaret Thornton. Influential in Naturism in both the U.S. and Canada for more than 30 years, he will be sadly missed by the entire naturist community.

“Body acceptance is the idea. Nude recreation is the way.”
- Lee R. Baxandall (1935-2008)

Fall Season Starting Up
Posted 11 September 2008

While we have had two very successful swims in July and August and a busy Summer all around, we welcome the beginning of swim season for the other three nude swim clubs. There will be two swims this month starting with our swim at Newton Wave Pool on Saturday September 13th followed by the NIFTY clothing optional swim at Templeton pool in Vancouver on September 27th.

We have had an active Summer with the first Summertime nude swims since 2002! We attended the WCANR convention at Sol Sante club in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island where we completed our application for AANR membership. We have received our provisional membership and are now able to enroll our members in AANR. Ask for details when signing up or renewing!

This Summer we were asked by the Wreck Beach Preservation Society to act as a "hospitality service" at the Bare Buns Fun Run in August. We took our new Skinnydipper canopy down to the beach and stored the runner's bags while they were participating in the race. Many runners took advantage of our service and expressed their appreciation. We'll be happy to be there again next year!

See you all at the swim on Saturday!

Regular schedule for Newton Wave Pool
Posted 31 May 2008

We are happy to announce that we have signed a contract with Surrey for regular rentals of Newton Wave Pool on the second Saturday of each month, starting in July. Unfortunately this means that our upcoming swim on June 14th will be our last at Renfrew Pool. We were very grateful that they made us welcome there after being evicted from Newton in 2003 and that they have been so friendly and accomodating to us during the past five years.
We have updated the swim schedule page to show the new program from July through December and we will be making changes to the rest of the website to reflect the new arrangements very soon.

Newton Wave Pool swim , restaurant change, website changes
Posted 18 May 2008

Our next nude swim at Newton Wave Pool will be on May 24th from 9:30pm to 11:00pm. After a very disappointing experience at the Red Robin, we have decided to try elswhere. The service was extremely slow and some people cancelled their orders despite having arrived at the restaurant at 7:00pm! For our May 24th swim we have arranged for our group to meet at the Boston Pizza restaurant which is in the same area as the Red Robin. They have promised us much better service. Look for the Boston Pizza about 150 metres south of Red Robin. It shares a building with the Burger King restaurant.

Watch for some major changes to our website in the near future. Because of problems with the existing software causing security concerns, we will be removing both the gallery and the guestbook. Expect to see these changes in the next one to two weeks.

Come ride the waves at Newton Wave Pool!
Posted 24 April 2008

After our wonderful return to the wave pool in March, we'll be riding the waves again April 26th and May 24th. As our swims run so late we have decided to organize our restaurant social before the swim. We'll be gathering at the Red Robin Restaurant about 2 blocks north of the pool, on King George Hwy starting at about 7:00pm. Check our upcoming events links at left for full details. See you there!

Convention 2008
Posted 15 April 2008

Sol Sante Club on Vancouver Island has just announced that they will be hosting the 2008 WCANR convention from July 31st to August 4th. In their letter to us, Doug, their president, said "We are working hard to make the 2008 WCANR Convention a memorable one. Please accept this letter as a personal invitation to all the members of Skinnydipper Recreation to attend WCANR Convention 2008 on Vancouver Island. Hope to see you there." If you have never attended a nudist convention, you should consider trying it for the first time this year. It is especially appropriate since the Skinnydipper Recreation Club is in the process of becoming an AANR affiliated club.

Naturism in Nature
Posted 11 April 2008

We've had Wreck Beach for many years as well as lots of small, hidden places for skinnydipping and, of course there are lots of great hot springs around the province to use, mostly clothing optional. Do you think its time to have more recreational areas legally designated for nude or clothing optional use? Tell us what you think - take our quick poll, at the right!

Skinnydipper gives PayPal the boot and says "Good Riddance"!
Posted 24 March 2008

We have been aware for some time now that PayPal suddenly and unilaterally terminated the account of the FCN, an organisation to which we belong and proudly so. Now that the FCN has publicly responded to this insult, we have taken the step of closing our account with PayPal and have removed all links to them from our websites. As long as they persist in their hypocritical attitudes we will not do business with them and encourage everyone who supports naturism and the FCN to do the same. Read "Why is PayPal Hypocritical?"

Newton Wave Pool - Many Happy Returns!
Posted 23 March 2008

Last night nearly 100 happy Skinnydippers celebrated our return to this fabulous facility with newly renovated waterslides. Keep watching our web site as we will be announcing our next event at Newton Wave Pool very soon.

Nude bowling on Sunday!
Posted 18 January 2008

We will have space for drop-ins at the bowling alley (Lucky Strike Lanes) in New Westminster on Sunday but admission is guaranteed only for those who have bought tickets in advance. We will be at the Wreck Beach swim at Lord Byng Pool on Saturday night. Look for us before and after the swim in the lobby. We'll be wearing our Skinnydipper t-shirts and hats.

Posted 28 November 2007

Mark January 20th on your calendar and plan to join us for an afternoon of nude bowling. Skinnydipper has arranged for three hours of nude bowling in New Westminster on January 20th, 2008 from 4:00pm until 7:00pm. See our events pages for complete details.

Judge declares City of Surrey "patently unreasonable"!
Posted 8 November 2007

Today is a great day for nudists in Canada. Judge Williamson ruled that the decision by the Surrey City Council in 2003 banning private rental of a public pool for nudist use to be patently unreasonable. He further ruled that the bylaw on which the city relied and which required all users of city pools to be "properly clothed in appropriate bathing attire" to be beyond the legislative competance of the city.

We will be posting further details about this momentous decison tomorrow on the Save the Wave website.

Earlybird Membership deal!
Posted 5 November 2007

Its that time of year again, all memberships expire at the end of December. In order to keep up with costs, we will be increasing our annual dues to $7.00 per membership. However, if you renew in November or December, you can get your 2008 membership at the 2007 rate of just $5.00! This applies to new memberships, too! You can sign up or renew your membership at our swim night on November 10 or December 8th.

Nudists in Court
Posted 21 October 2007

Last Thursday, 18 October, Skinnydipper Services Inc. went to Court. Our application for a judicial review of the decision by the City of Surrey to deny us use of Newton Wave Pool. Although no decision was handed down on Thursday, we are hopeful that the judge will find in our favour. See more details on our Save the Wave website at stw.skinnydipper.ca.

Skinnydipper Swims Return to Renfrew!
Posted 21 October 2007

The Vancouver Civic labour disputes are over and our swim schedules are returning to normal. Our next swim will be at Renfrew Community Centre Pool on November 10th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm. See our events pages for full details.

October Swim in North Vancouver
Posted 2 October 2007

Although there are hints in the media that there may soon be a settlement to the 10 week old civic strike, there is not enough time for us to arrange to use Renfrew Pool by October 13. However, we have been able to make arrangements with William Griffin Pool in North Vancouver. Skinnydippers will have a nude swim on October 13th from 7:45pm to 9:45pm.

No Swim in September
Posted 2 September 2007

With the civic strike in Vancouver still on and no sign of a settlement, we have run out of time. We have made a difficult decision to cancel plans for a September swim. We are hoping that an agreement can be reached in time for the next swim night on October 13th. At this time we have no information from N.I.F.T.Y. about the status of their swim on Septebmer 29th. Don't forget the Skinnydipper Pub Night on September 15 (details below).

Pub Night is Back
Posted 25 August 2007

We have arranged another pub night at the Fire Fighters' Club in Burnaby on September 15th. Admission $20 per person, all tickets will be sold in advance. Get full details on the Save the Wave website.

September Swims Uncertain
Posted 25 August 2007

Due to the ongoing strike by civic workers, all Vancouver area nude swims are uncertain at least for September. If the strike is not settled in time, it would potentially affect both the Skinnydipper swim at Renfrew Pool on September 8th and the N.I.F.T.Y. swim at Templeton on September 29th. Although we are hopeful that this will not come to pass, we must caution our members to check our websites frequntly for news. We will post updates as promptly as possible.

Save the Wave Pub Night
Posted May 2007

We will be having a fund-raising night in June in place of our regular nude swim at Renfrew. We have arranged a pub night at the Fire Fighters' Club in Burnaby on June 23. Admission $20 per person, all tickets will be sold in advance. Get full details on the Save the Wave website.

Old News

If you look up just under our navigation bar, you'll see our new "Save the Wave" button. This button will take you to our information pages about our campaign to regain access to Newton Wave Pool for regular, private-rental, nude swims. Please visit and while there, consider making a donation to our "Save the Wave" legal fund. If you are a webmaster of a nudist website, please consider putting the button on your site to help with our campaign. You'll find the code you need on the Save the Wave pages.

We have a new poll just to the right. The question this time is apropos, given the public launch of our "Save the Wave" campaign. As usual, previous poll results are available by following the link below the poll.

Due to pool maintenance, we will not be having a swim in June. Our last swim for this season will be Saturday, May 12. Please make sure you tell all your nude swim friends.
